Tracks in the cosmos (South Africa)

Bushmen and Computer Specialists cooperate in a scientific project.

This short documentary made for the World EXPO and the German television station NDR, showed the diverse cultures in South Africa.Vet Piet, a tracker in the Kalahari, explained to scientists how animal tracks were read. Together, they made computer symbols that illiterate trackers could understand. Louis Liebenberg, a Computer Specialist, made from these symbols a computer program called Cybertracker. Information recorded in the field is input on handheld computers, and then downloaded. Then, utilizing the Satellite Navigation System (GPS) animal tracks are plotted and the basis for worldwide ecosystem observations initiated.

This film will be viewed by visitors at the World EXPO.
